Maryland House

Living area addition and kitchen remodel to existing home.

The owners of this home wanted an extra living space on the main floor to house a baby grand piano and to serve as a sun room. They had wrestled with the idea for years but held off for a number of reasons: they did not want to affect the natural light in the existing floor since it already had a tendency to be dark; they were concerned that an addition would not integrate naturally with the existing home; and, they had difficulty envisioning where to locate the addition.

We decided to do a two-story addition across the back of the house which would extend the kitchen and add a new, connected living area and deck on the main level, and expand the basement level for visual mass under the extended portion. This would also provided the family with much needed storage space.

The finished home now has a light-filled kitchen and sunroom. Light in the main level has been enhanced by providing a new cased opening between the existing library and the new sunroom.
